1996 | DCP | UK | D: Danny Boyle

Mark “Rent Boy” Renton (Ewen McGregor) is a 26-year-old unemployed heroin addict and lives with his parents in Edinburgh. He regularly takes drugs with his misfit mates Simon "Sick Boy" Williamson (Johnny Lee Miller) and Daniel "Spud" Murphy (Ewen Bremner). Fuelled by desperation and camaraderie, the friends chase pleasure while mostly dodging consequence.

Based on the 1993 novel by Irvine Welsh adapted for screen by John Hodge, Trainspotting is considered one of Britain’s best. It balances anarchic energy with moments of piercing honesty to express desperation and defiance. Its restless momentum reflects lives on the edge of control. The iconic soundtrack by Boyle combines techno, rock and Brit-pop.

‘Exhilarating and appalling in equal measure — and impossible to ignore. - Mark Kermode, Sight & Sound
