2017 | DCP | USA | D: Guillermo del Toro

Elisa Esposito (Sally Hawkins) a lonely janitor, works in a secret and high-security government lab in Cold War-era America.

She forms a unique relationship with an amphibious creature that is held in captivity. As danger closes in, the film unfolds as a romantic fable about otherness and connection. The Shape of Water blends fantasy with melodrama and finds beauty in the margins. It challenges audiences to listen to issues rather than demonise the ‘other.’

The film is a co-production between the US and Mexico and is inspired by del Toro’s childhood memories of seeing Creature from the Black Lagoon. The musical score is by Alexandra Desplat and captures the sound and feeling of floating in water.

‘A fairy tale that believes empathy is a radical act.’ - A.O. Scott, The New York Times
