The film unfolds as a surrealist neo-noir mystery with wild and unconventional themes conveyed via dreamy sequences that bleed fantasy and reality into each other. Mulholland Drive began life as a TV pilot but after the project stalled, director David Lynch reworked it into a feature film, building on the surreal style that followed his cult hit Twin Peaks.
