In 1988, the NFSA launched the Kookaburra Card. This card and its associated membership in the Kookaburra Club entitled holders to big discounts at cinemas across the country. For the NFSA, it was a direct source of fundraising and a way to promote the collection and audiovisual heritage all over the nation.

It also came with a host of other benefits, such as reduced new-release VHS rentals from local video store chains and 15% off at the NFSA gift shop. Eventually, the Kookaburra Card stopped laughing and was retired, but it is remembered fondly as a clever bit of marketing and a mutually beneficial way to support cinemas and film heritage in Australia.

A 1992 advertisement produced by the NFSA targeted regular cinema attendees and film lovers. Cutting between a contemporary movie theatre and a montage of archival footage, it showcases the breadth of the NFSA's collection, mixing in newsreels with recognisable pop icons like Star Trek. The ad is certainly very of its moment: fast-paced edits, upbeat sound and topped off with a snappy tagline: 'While the prices have been cut, the action hasn't!'
