1990s

The 1990s gave Australia a global voice while reframing its national identity. Paul Keating’s Redfern Speech and works like Yothu Yindi’s Treaty and Archie Roach’s Took the Children Away amplified Indigenous perspectives. Pop culture thrived: Kylie reinvented herself, Crowded House wrapped up a brilliant career, and Savage Garden topped charts worldwide. On screen, Muriel’s Wedding, The Piano and Strictly Ballroom became darlings of the international film community. The ’90s proved Australia could speak to the world in loud, proud, distinctive voices.
