2016 | DCP | FRA | D: Michael Dudok de Wit

Stranded on a deserted island, a man’s struggle for survival gives way to a life lived in harmony with the natural world. Director Dudok de Wit’s short story inspired an international co-production between Japan’s Studio Ghibli and French collaborators Wild Bunch. Told without dialogue, The Red Turtle traces birth, companionship and loss through graceful animation and elemental storytelling. Its strength lies in the film’s narrative simplicity, offering a universal meditation on time, connection and acceptance.

‘A work of rare purity, as simple and as vast as the sea itself.’ - Peter Debruge, Variety
