1988 | DCP | USA | D: Penny Marshall

A 13-year-old boy Josh (Tom Hanks) wishes to grow up and wakes up one morning to find himself mysteriously in the body of an adult. The story follows Josh as he navigates work, romance and adult responsibilities with a child’s instincts.

Big balances high-concept fantasy with emotional sincerity and uses humour to explore innocence, ambition and the bargain of adulthood. The film’s warmth lies in treating childhood not as something to outgrow but something to protect.

The film was a huge commercial success and pivotal to launching Tom Hanks’s career.

‘A fantasy that works because it’s grounded in emotional truth.’- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
