In a future devastated by a deadly virus, prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis) is sent back in time to trace the origins of the outbreak. As Cole moves between the past and future, he struggles to distinguish memory from reality. His search leads him to Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt), an erratic psychiatric patient whose radical ideas about society, power and disease deepen the film’s unsettling exploration of sanity, fate and free will.
