When the Camera Stopped Rolling is a moving, personal story that also shines a light on an unsung pioneer of Australian cinema – Lilias Fraser.

Written and directed by Jane Castle, a tremendous filmmaker in her own right, the documentary tells the story of Jane’s mother Lilias and her career contributing to Australia’s cinematic history over many decades.

Lilias overcame many personal and systemic challenges in her pursuit of success. Those challenges had profound impacts on her own wellbeing, as well as affecting her family and their interrelationships.

When the Camera Stopped Rolling takes us on a thoughtful, contemplative and powerful journey through history, intergenerational trauma and Australian storytelling.

It skilfully blends archival and family footage, extracts from Lilias’ work, and gorgeous contemporary footage and visual imagery. The film also includes materials sourced from the NFSA collection.

Being able to unpack the film's themes with Jane and Pat, along with our wonderful and engaged audience, was an honour with everyone generously sharing their experiences and stories.
