Play School: Walking in the Bush

1999

  • NFSA ID413420
  • Year1999

It’s the Play School all-stars! Presenters from different eras of the long-running ABC children’s series unite on ‘Walking in the Bush’, a track from the album Hullabaloo (1999).

The song is playful, accessible and educational for its preschool audience. It has a steady marching rhythm appropriate to a song about walking that kids could imitate while listening. The lyrics suggest actions that are easy for young children to perform, such as jumping like a kangaroo or burrowing like a bilby. As well as flora, fauna, and natural features to enjoy, the song also warns kids about unexpected dangers like bull ants.

The singers include Benita Collings (presenter from 1969–1999), country singer Colin Buchanan (1992–99), and Karen Pang, who joined Play School in 1998. Pang, who was notably also the first cast member of Asian descent, is now one of the longest-serving presenters in Play School’s history.
