Magda's Big Things was a comedy travel series in which Magda Szubanski, dressed in khaki, treats Australia's roadside Big Things with all the gravity of a David Attenborough nature documentary. This short clip is the opening title montage, stitched together from the show's road trip across the country for a TV1 promotional reel.
The humour is immediately apparent and quintessentially Australian. Magda is propped on her elbows on a jetty in her safari outfit and committing so hard to the bit that the audience feels that they’re not simply being told a joke, but are inherently involved in it.
A few seconds later, when Magda steps through a miniature model village in yellow clogs, dwarfing the tiny buildings and railway tracks, we get a different kind of laugh. The show’s premise is inverted, with the safari guide who is cataloguing Big Things briefly becoming one herself. It’s a joke inside a joke inside an even larger fruit-shaped joke.
Magda Szubanski has spent decades turning the small affectations of Australian life into beloved comedy, most famously as Kath and Kim’s Sharon Strzelecki, with her netball mania and love of Shane Warne. A safari hat in front of a fibreglass banana isn't really a stretch from there.
