  • Year1990

The first licensed Mad Max game was released in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Canadian studio Gray Matter adapted an earlier, non-licensed game called Road Raider (AKA Motor Massacre), which had itself been heavily inspired by George Miller’s films.

Mad Max is a top-down car action game set in a post-apocalyptic world where players fight raiders, collect resources and race through the wasteland. The cover art features a still and logo font from Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) to emphasise that this is an official game based on the movie. Released during the 30-year gap between the third and fourth films in the franchise, the game speaks to the worldwide appeal of Mad Max and the story’s adaptability and influence on other media.

George Miller was consulted during the pre-production of Mad Max (2015), a video game published 25 years later by Warner Bros. after the successful cinematic release of Mad Max: Fury Road.
