Ken Done Art and Design cinema advertisement

1992

Known for his colourful renderings of local landmarks, landscapes and textures, Ken Done had a huge impact on the visual identity of 1980s Australia. His inventive patterns moved from canvases onto t-shirts, doona covers and greeting cards, enjoyed around the world in both galleries and as everyday merchandise.

This 90-second cinema advertisement for Done's fashion-wear label captures his versatility as an artist, whose work was woven into the fabric of casual Australian life. The ad – tailored for the 1992–93 season – spotlights Done’s inclination for summer days and bodies of water, through scenes of tanned people relaxing by the pool and at a beach house.

There’s an element of luxurious cool, from the pristine appearances of the models to the sensual undercurrent. But the clips mostly have a laidback and domestic energy, speaking to Done’s fluid movement between fine art, commercial design and everyday objects.

After working as the Creative Director of international advertising agency J Walter Thompson, Done became a full-time painter in 1975. These iconic paintings, along with his textiles and design work, cemented Done as one of our most internationally renowned creatives. He was beloved in Japan, where Tokyo fashion and lifestyle magazine Hanako featured a Done painting on the cover every week for over 15 years.
