Known for their dark humour, timely cultural jabs and absurdist public stunts, anonymous seven-piece band TISM (This Is Serious Mum) developed a large underground cult following throughout the '80s and '90s.

The masked Melbourne group's single 'Greg! The Stop Sign!!' contains the hallmarks of their biting nihilist style. Donning black balaclavas, the members of TISM haunt the fringes like ghostly reapers, as the arch lyrics poke fun at hollow social aspirations and the inevitability of death. The bizarre melange of images includes AFL players (Shane Wakelin, Chris Hemley and Justin Peckett) vigorously riding exercise bikes, inspirational text emblazoned on the walls of a St Kilda club, and gritty scenes at a teen party, including an infamous scene where a dog licks up a drunken girl's vomit. Hedonistic excess and strict discipline are equalised by the promise of death, with the lyrics reminding audiences that humanity may be wiped out by a comet in the next 10,000 years.

The video and lyrics also reflect TISM's referential style, grounded in local touchstones. Along with the montages of St Kilda’s Moorabbin Oval, there are references to 'graffiti the Dandenong line' and Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton's At the Movies. The novelty song was nominated for the ARIA Award for Best Independent Release in 1996.
