  • WARNING: This clip contains coarse language

Comedy-horror web series Girt by Fear examines modern Australian identity with some gnarly genre twists.

This clip from the second episode, It Came from Outer Suburbia, reflects the show's unexpected tonal balance. Andy is an irreverent young man who just wants to go to a boozy Halloween party in his astronaut costume, but his Cantonese parents won't let him out the door without some stern words. In their escalating confrontation, the scene captures some serious tensions, from Andy's desperation for freedom to his struggle with conformity. Andy and his parents might as well be on different planets, even before green blood starts oozing.

Created by a collective of five recent film school graduates, Girt by Fear was produced over 18 months. It asks contemporary Australian audiences: what cultures do we draw from and recognise?
