Multimedia artist Lynette Wallworth invites audiences into the fluorescent universe of coral reefs. This footage of her work Coral: Rekindling Venus was designed to be viewed in the fulldome format, as an immersive experience that blends eco-documentary with art installation.
The close-ups of highly detailed underwater ecosystems were uniquely mapped for viewing on planetarium screens, tying in with the astronomical phenomenon known as the Transit of Venus. Made to coincide with a period where Venus is briefly visible against the solar disk, the footage is inflected with cosmic images. The vivid shades and drifting motes of sea life are akin to constellations, while the circular frame evokes planets, the sun and cycles of life.
Submerged in this underwater planet, viewers are confronted with both sublime beauty and the delicacy of these complex networks, which lie directly in the line of threat of climate change. Tuned into cosmic and earthly interconnectedness, the work is a call for awareness and survival.
