Born in the seaside town of Ceduna, on South Australia's west coast, singer-songwriter Crystal Clyne (née Mastosavvas) had led an expansive career. Performing as spoken-word lyricist MC Lady Lash and Crystal Mercy, the Kokatha-Greek artist has embraced a variety of sounds: hip hop, R&B, soul, jazz, electro, and even opera.
This clip comes from 'Busy Bee’, featured on Lady Lash's 2010 EP Pearl. Listeners can experience Clyne's vocal technique and instrumentation, which bring bluesy, soulful rhythms to an Australian context. The excerpt reflects Clyne's lyrical and melodic experimentation, which has led to her versatile musical identity.
For her work on Pearl, Clyne was awarded Redfern Records' 'Female of the Year' prize in 2010, and the EP was featured in the ABC series Ready for This. In 2012, Clyne released the album Crystal Mercy: The Fisherman’s Daughter, leading to her receiving a Victorian Indigenous Performer Award for Most Promising Act and a Music Victoria Award for Best Indigenous Act in 2013.
