1998 | DCP | USA | D: John Madden

A young William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) finds his creative block lifted by a passionate love affair with Viola de Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow) that mirrors the play he is writing (Romeo and Juliet).

With a screenplay by Tom Stoppard the film mixes theatrical invention with romantic comedy, playfully imagining how life and art might collide. Its charm lies in celebrating storytelling itself as messy, joyful and born of human connection.

‘A witty love letter to theatre, invention and romantic folly.’  - David Denby, The New Yorker
