Charlie Chaplin’s silent comedy follows a factory worker struggling with modern life.

1936 | G | 87 mins | D: Charlie Chaplin

After a nervous breakdown on the assembly line, The Little Tramp (Charlie Chaplin) drifts between prison, unemployment and brief moments of freedom. Together with a young woman (Paulette Goddard), he chases stability, dignity and simple happiness, resisting a society that values efficiency over humanity.

Blending slapstick with social critique, Modern Times is both riotously funny and quietly radical, confronting dehumanisation with resilience and grace. The character of The Little Tramp appears across many of Chaplin’s films including City Lights, The Gold Rush and The Kid.

‘A timeless work of genius.’ — Roger Ebert, Chicago SunTimes

Presented on 35mm film prints from the NFSA collection.
