BOOK CLUB AT NFSA IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ABC RADIO CANBERRA.
Explore how culturally significant books have been adapted and reimagined as films.

1987 | DCP | USA | D: Rob Reiner

A bedridden boy's grandfather reads him the story of a farm boy-turned-pirate who encounters numerous obstacles, enemies and allies in his quest to be reunited with his true love.

Buttercup (Robin Wright) falls for farmhand Westley (Cary Elwes) and the two navigate a whirlwind of giant heroes, villains, and unexpected allies who either help or hinder their love.

Mark Knopfler’s soundtrack perfectly matches the film’s quirky romantic tone, while Rob Reiner’s direction blends swashbuckling adventure, comedy, and heartfelt moments with impeccable timing, giving the film its lasting charm. The Princess Bride is adapted for the screen by William Goldman from his novel of the same name.

‘A film that understands how sincerity and parody can strengthen each other.’ - Peter TraversRolling Stone

This screening will be followed by a discussion about the film as an adaptation of William Goldman’s novel The Princess Bride with 666AM ABC Radio Canberra presenter Alice Matthews and author Rhiân Williams, co-host of ABC Afternoons Book Corner Book Club.
