Released in 1977, ‘You’ became Marcia Hines’ biggest hit, spending 25 weeks on the Australian charts and peaking at No. 2. Written by American songwriter Tom Snow, the track is built on a smooth pop framework, but it is Hines’ vocal performance on the recording that gives it shape and staying power. Drawing on gospel and soul traditions, she uses control, tonal warmth and careful phrasing to let emotion build through the song.

The music video unfolds on a simple studio set in unmistakable '70s burnt orange and olive. The warmth is immediate, the joy obvious – but so is the control as Hines commands the frame with ease, meeting the camera head-on.

At a time when Australian pop was still defining its mainstream identity, ‘You’ confirmed Hines as a major national artist and showed how vocal interpretation could shape the sound – and visibility – of Australian music.
