Riding the wave of the hit film franchise reboot of Charlie's Angels in the early 2000s, Australian reality series Undercover Angels followed Ian Thorpe and his 'angels' as they sought to make a difference in the lives of everyday Australians.
Ian's Angels consist of Jacqui O, Katie Underwood (of reality TV pop girl group Bardot) and Simone Kessell, who took on various good deeds while sporting the latest Y2K trends. The opening credits reflect how many major visual and style cues were borrowed from its Hollywood inspiration: leather pants, flashy convertibles, matching monochromatic outfits and scenes of the girls boxing and using futuristic spy tech. Flip phones, cyber font and a simulacrum of an online dress-up game also point to the era's trends – and the widespread obsession with new tech and fast cars.
For all these dramatic and glamorous stylings, the show's premise is rooted in the mundane – and has little to do with stealth or action-packed escapades. The clip is from the opening of the series' first TV special, where the Angels hope to reunite a Perth couple who have been separated for 60 years. Their missions in other episodes include decorating a nursery, adding a deck to a house and finding a replacement pooch for a stolen dog.
Undercover Angels ran for just one season and two specials. The Sydney Morning Herald TV critic was not a fan, calling it 'the worst show in the history of the world'.
