During the contest to choose the Australian representative at the 1978 Asian Amateur Singing Competition in Hong Kong, the Seven Network invited pop singer Margaret Miller to perform as special guest.

Hailing from Hong Kong, Miller performed in Cantonese, Mandarin and English – and frequently covered pop and soul tracks from the UK and America. After a preamble about searching for her long-lost father in Australia, Miller performs 'Bye Bye Love' by American pop duo the Everly Brothers. Miller's styling and clothing all reference her Hong Kong roots, while her specialty in Western genres reflects the influential reach of American pop, soul and funk across a fast-globalising world.

Miller's guest spot, and the publicity around the contest itself, seem to represent a new openness to cultural fusion in Australia. However, despite Australia's geographical proximity to Asia and its growing multiculturalism, diverse representation in the media was still scarce – made apparent by the fact that all the Australian contestants that year were of European descent.
