Proposed transgender law reform in NSW

1984

  • NFSA ID475986
  • Year1984

This Eyewitness News report captures an historic moment of celebration for advocates of transgender law reform in New South Wales in the 1980s. It records the work of the Australian Transsexual Association (now the Gender Centre) through Tiresias House and features an interview with trans activist Vivian Sharman. The report mentions proposed gender-recognition laws, supported at the time by Attorney-General Frank Walker, that will 'soon' come into effect. The champagne could have stayed on ice; the laws were not passed by the NSW Government until 1996. But in interviewing Sharman, the story succeeds in putting a human face on the discrimination faced by trans people and their ongoing struggle for legal recognition.

Note: the report refers to trans people throughout as 'transsexuals', terminology that was common at the time but viewers today may find offensive.
