Preserving and returning Papua New Guinea's film heritage

2025

The NFSA and the National Film Institute (NFI) of Papua New Guinea (PNG) have co-designed a project to assist the NFI with preserving and storing their film archive, including digitising and returning at-risk PNG films.

Tropical climates are unforgiving to fragile film stock, making the digital preservation of these cultural treasures not just important, but urgent.

So far, we've preserved film culture from the 1960s to the 1980s – some of the most formative years in PNG's cinematic history.
