A feature film's poster is an important marketing tool and conveys to audiences just why they should see a movie, whether it's because of a gripping, high-stakes plot, famous cast, or something else that makes it particularly interesting. Each poster is unique to the film, and even then, posters can also be made to target a specific country. This film poster for Caddie (1976) shows how this Australian feature was marketed to a Polish audience. In it, the still-life composition of an animal carcass and a chipped dinner plate by Polish artist Jerzy Flisak could easily be mistaken for a Sidney Nolan painting rather than a film poster. Flisak was known for his satirical illustrations, and his artwork expertly captures the harsh realities of the Great Depression during which Caddie is set. It also conveys the dramatic tone of the film, which is about a struggling Sydney barmaid navigating a male-dominated world in 1920s and '30s Australia.
