After the luxury cruise yacht The Sea Fox was beached off the coast of Darwin in 1959, American actor-magician John Calvert flew to Sydney with his stage assistant, Pilita Corrales.

This newsreel story (from Cinesound Review No. 1447) shows Calvert making the most of the publicity, arriving for the cameras arm-in-arm with Corrales and the boatswain's wife. Corrales stands out in a chiffon evening gown, but not yet a known quantity, the narration mixes up the two women at one point. The marooned luxury yacht and its glamorous passengers – which included a chimpanzee from Calvert's magic act – had been a minor media sensation.

Pilita Corrales (1937–2025) remained in Australia for a few years and soon transitioned from magician's sidekick to popular singer with several notable television appearances and a blossoming recording career. Corrales returned to her native Philippines in 1963 and transcended to superstar status; she released a staggering 135 albums over six decades and was dubbed 'Asia's Queen of Song'.

Read a tribute to Pilita Corrales

Siegfried & Roy cited John Calvert (1911–2013) as a key inspiration for their Las Vegas magic act. Calvert continued working as a magician in the US for decades after his Australian escapade and died at the age of 102.
