Anne leaves her small-town comforts behind and moves to Sydney, where relatives offer a foothold into urban life. At first, everything feels new – the pace, the patterns, the weekend rituals. But soon, she finds her rhythm, a job, her own flat and a growing sense of independence.
Made as an orientation film for new arrivals to the city, Mainly for Women offers a 1970s view of Sydney domesticity with a quietly feminist undercurrent. It’s practical, observational and surprisingly intimate.
Produced by Joe Scully and directed by David Eastman. An Australian Commonwealth Film Unit Production. © National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.
