This excerpt features a remix of ‘Sweetness and Light’ by Sydney electronic music artists Paul Mac and Andy Rantzen, who performed together as the duo Itch-E and Scratch-E. Mixed by fellow electronic music pioneer Meem AKA Michael Moebus, the track reflects the transformative and iterative nature of Australia’s dance counterculture in the 1990s. Meem takes the recognisable vocal sample from the original and transforms it through his own production flourishes, including a distinctive breakbeat.
The track is drawn from a Freaky Loops two-CD compilation, where it is listed as ‘Leetness and Sight – Meem meets Itch-E And Scratch-E’. Freaky Loops was a series of dance parties hosted by 2SER in the late 1990s. It reveals a distinct social scene beyond the music itself, where radio, live music and artists were constantly responsive to both the moment and each other.
Explore more of After Dark – a Deep Dive into Australian nightlife that draws on decades of material from the NFSA collection.
