Gotye mashes up viral covers of ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’

2025

Doechii’s song ‘Anxiety’, having its viral moment in 2025, samples Gotye’s multi-platinum hit ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ (2011), which was itself a mosaic of samples.

When the internet showed its love for his song in a wave of covers and parodies, Gotye was intrigued, and mashed about 300 of them together in a video piece called ‘Somebodies: A YouTube Orchestra’.

In 2013, he shared the video and his composition methods with Australian high-school students tuning into a session of NFSA Connects.

His joyous play in the ‘Somebody I Used to Know’ viral hall of mirrors is a key moment in Australian musical history, which the NSFA is dedicated to collecting and preserving.
