A new millennium saw a flourishing club scene in Australia and the rise of electronic dance music (EDM). This edited footage captures dance parties in Sydney and Canberra around the year 2000, a time when Olympic fever and the internet revolution were globalising Australian youth.
The ecstatic atmosphere of the Y2K era is on full display. Glow sticks, tube tops and Chupa Chups were dance essentials, but there's a notable absence of mobile phones. The impacts of the 1990s rave scene carried over, with EDM evolving at a rapid clip: matching the cyber-music, we see many of the dancers with narrow, Matrix-esque sunglasses.
Venues featured include Shark Bar, Utopia II, Age of Love, and United parties. The footage showcases performances by electronic music artists including Gee Wiz, Crisis, Fenix, Judge Jules, Sub Zero, Jumping Jack, Pee Wee Ferris, Nik Fish, BeXta, Mark Dynamix, Chris Fresh, Ben Korbel, and Paul Holden.
