This is the inciting incident from the first episode of the Stan Original drama series Bump, which sets up the whole series. From the episode’s opening moments, we’ve established that Oly (Nathalie Morris) is driven, high-achieving and focused on doing well in her final high school exams. When she collapses in the bathroom with stomach pains, we assume the worst.

Then the paramedic asks, ‘Is it possible she’s pregnant?’, and the energy of the scene subtly shifts to something more unpredictable. Oly’s overemphatic denials and the shock and quiet confusion of her mum (Claudia Karvan) start to feel more comical. It’s a high-wire act of tonal balancing achieved through nimble writing (by Kelsey Munro), directing (by Geoff Bennett) and the performances of Morris, Karvan and Brenden Dodds as the paramedic. The scene perfectly captures the character-driven, serio-comic tone that the series aims for.

Crucial to establishing a successful hangout show is an ensemble cast that viewers will want to get to know. These early scenes include intriguing glimpses of Oly’s boyfriend Lachie (Peter Thurnwald) and schoolmate Santiago (Carlos Sanson Jr), who is yet to learn he is the father. Santiago is a Chilean Australian, and we also see his PE teacher dad (Ricardo Scheihing Vasquez) dancing with Karvan at the very start of the clip. An unexpected – and presumably unwelcome – teenage pregnancy sets up myriad dramatic and comic storylines to be explored across the show’s five seasons.
