'I'm excited!' is the famous catchphrase of Big Kev, AKA Kevin McQuay (1950–2005), which he bellows out in the opening of his late-night talk show. The cleaning products entrepreneur was famed for his television commercials, and his public persona evolved from promo spots on Good Morning Australia to full-blown media stardom.
This clip from the first episode of Big Kev As Seen on TV reveals that his short-lived show was ostentatious, strangely casual and extremely Australian. In a flag-patterned blazer, Big Kev speaks to a live audience of ‘at least 50 people’ seated at a Gold Coast pub. It's debatable to what extent this show was intended as a parody of its host, with his opening speech leaning into his fierce patriotism, 'battler' persona and desire to win a Logie. A surreal bit of celebrity farce, the clip reflects both the appeal of Big Kev and the eccentricities of late-night Aussie TV culture.
Moments of Big Kev As Seen on TV, from later in the episode, satirise the talk-show form, including a prize wheel that contains only Big Kev’s cleaning products. The tone of the clip fits in with Big Kev's out-there career, which spanned sponsoring his own V8 Supercar racing crew to releasing a novelty album with the band Mental as Anything.
