After eight months of qualifying games in Auckland, Sydney, Melbourne, Tehran, Seoul and Hong Kong, the Australian team earned the lone slot available for AFC (Asian Football Confederation) / OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) nations in the FIFA World Cup. They made history as the first Australian team to enter the 16-team tournament.
