International posters from the theatrical release of a film are important, not just because they enticed audiences into cinemas when the film was released, but because they give us a window into what was seen as marketable about an Australian film to different countries. In this poster for the Czech release of Australian animated classic Dot and the Kangaroo, artist Vratislav Hlavatý created an illustration, but boldly reimagined its star – just look at the massive feet on that red kangaroo! With its plain green background, it also doesn't lean into Dot and the Kangaroo's mix of animation and live action. It's an interesting example of how a local Czech artist was able to create a surprisingly different take on animated characters in order to market a film to his home country. While this poster was made in 1981, Dot and the Kangaroo was released in Australia in 1977, and is significant because it was only the second animated feature film to be made here.
